Thinking about getting eyelash extensions but have a few questions first? You’re not alone! Whether you're wondering how long lash extensions last, how to care for them, or what to expect during your appointment, we’ve got you covered. In this FAQ, you’ll find expert answers to the most common questions about lash extensions — all designed to help you feel confident, informed, and excited for your lash transformation. Let’s dive in!
Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent fibers that are attached to your natural lashes using a special adhesive. They are designed to add length, fullness, and lift to your natural lashes, creating a more enhanced and dramatic look.
With proper care and regular refills, eyelash extensions can last for many years. Most people book a fill appointment every 2 to 3 weeks to maintain a full look as natural lashes shed and regrow. If you got a set of lashes and didn't return for refills, you can expect the set to last about 4-6 weeks total. Keep in mind that the best results and fullest look is usually achieved after a full set and 2 or 3 refills because this gives your lash artist a chance to "upfill" the base set, increasing the total number of lashes placed. So it's highly recommended to return for at least 3 refills to get the best experience.
Yes — when applied by a trained professional using high-quality materials, lash extensions are completely safe. It's important to avoid DIY applications and always choose a certified lash technician.
Prices vary based on location, technician experience, and the style you choose. On average, a full set can range from $120 to $300, with refills costing $50 to $100. Be weary of paying super low prices because that's usually a sign that your lash artist is not very busy or experienced and doesn't have the basic skills to be able to charge normal prices.
You usually don't need mascara with lash extensions! If you feel you need mascara after getting lash extensions then it's likely that you may be used to a fuller look. Advise your lash artist on your next appointment that you'd like your extensions fuller. Try to avoid using mascara between lash fill appointments because that will only introduce oil to the lash base, weaken the adhesive bond and increase shed rate -- resulting in thinner lashes. If you must, use a water-based mascara on the tips only — never waterproof formulas, which can damage the extensions.
Proper aftercare is crucial: Avoid getting them wet for the first 24 hours. Do not rub or tug on your lashes. Use oil-free cleansers. Brush them daily with a clean spoolie. Sleep on your back if possible to avoid lash friction.
Yes, after the first 24–48 hours. Once the adhesive has fully cured, you can shower, swim, and exercise — but it's best to avoid exposing them to excessive steam, hot water, or rubbing.
No — if applied correctly and cared for properly, lash extensions will not damage your natural lashes. Damage usually happens from improper application or aggressive removal.
Never pull or pick at lash extensions yourself. Always visit a professional for safe removal using specialized adhesive removers that protect your natural lashes.
Common types include: Classic Lashes (one extension per natural lash)Volume Lashes (multiple lightweight extensions fanned out)Hybrid Lashes (mix of Classic and Volume for a fuller look)Mega Volume Lashes (very full, dramatic effect). After 17 years and more than 12,000 clients, we've noticed that the Classic Single lashes tend to receive the highest satisfaction and client return rate, compared to other lash types. This may be because classic lash extensions look more real, are easier to care for, and cost less than volume or hybrid varieties.
Arrive with clean, makeup-free eyes. Avoid caffeine before your appointment (helps you relax!). Discuss your desired style with your technician. Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours for a full set.
Yes! Lash extensions are completely customizable — from natural and wispy to bold and glamorous. Your technician will help you choose the right length, curl, and thickness for your eye shape and personal style.

Zipp Lash was founded in 2008 by dual-licensed optician & contact lens specialist Jason Carruthers. We combined advanced beauty technology with clinical eye care standards to create the highest quality results in a consistent manner. Beautiful eyelash extensions that last long and look real, even up close, making mascara obsolete and unnecessary.
In 2012, the Zipp Lash team appeared on Dragons Den where we almost got a deal and Jason was offered a job by Kevin O'Leary, which he declined. The rest, as they say, is history.
